As the world starts to open back up, many people are packing their bags for vacation again. Staying healthy and fit while on vacation remains a big priority, especially amidst COVID-19.
Eating healthy and regular workouts seem simple, but they can be hard to stick to, especially if you’re going on a vacation. If you go and eat plenty of junk food, drink a lot of soda and alcohol, and skip your workouts, you’re going to feel terrible when you get back home. That’s definitely not how you want a vacation to be, right? You’re going to put your health and happiness first and try to stay fit while having fun.
There are a few things you can do to stay fit during a vacation and not completely throw your healthy habits out of the window.
1. Drink Tons of Water
Water is the key during a vacation. Between long flights, hours of driving distance, late nights, salty foods, and hot weather, you can easily get dehydrated which can ruin your trip. Studies show that not drinking enough water can make you feel less content and affect your mood. Mild dehydration also increases the frequency of headaches in women. So, bring a water bottle with you wherever you go and remember to drink up.
2. Eat a Big Ass Salad During Lunch
This might not seem like the happiest lunch, but we can’t deny it’s the healthiest lunch ever. Of course, you’re going to want to indulge, but don’t forget to load up on veggies and lean proteins too. Ordering an extra salad for sharing is the way to include veggies in your meal. The more you stick to your regular diet, the better so, you don’t spoil your body.
3. Workout before Heading Out
If you can’t find time to hit the gym, don’t skip exercising altogether. A quick workout is better than no workout. You probably get exhausted at the end of the day, so try to squeeze some workouts before heading out. Wake up early to start your day right and go for a run or swim if possible, or doing any high-intensity interval training is also a great way to get in a quick and effective workout.
4. Walk when Possible
There are ways to squeeze in fitness that don’t have to be a traditional workout. Instead of hopping on every bus or train, if it is possible, and safe to walk to your destination, just do it! If you drive your own car, park a bit farther away so that you’re forced to walk more. This small walking session will add up your calorie burn. Find creative ways to be active, and you will stay slim and feel great!
5. Limit Soda and Alcohol
Aside from the usual glass of wine or pint of beer, all those extra fancy and dazzling cocktails are usually full of sugar. The same goes for soda drinks. Both soda and alcohol add up fast on calories without you knowing it. One cocktail or soda will add at least 100 calories to your day. It is okay to enjoy one or two, but don’t get crazy. Pick and choose where you want to splurge so you don’t overdo it.
In Summary
Healthy eating and regular workouts during a vacation are tough, but it’s doable. After all, if you put in months of hard work to have a lean, tight and healthy body, why sabotage this over a vacation? Vacation is supposed to be relaxing and refreshing when you get back home and not feel deprived. If you follow these tips, you will stay fit while still having a blast on vacation.
